Our next production Mutiara takes to the Broome Civic Centre stage in September for its World Premiere as part of Shinju Matsuri!
Mutiara reflects on 100 years of the brutality and seduction of Broome’s pearling industry exploring the depths of the divers’ alien underwater world, and their survival and solidarity above the surface.
Intercultural dance and visual art combine to reveal the resilience, love and strength of ancestors. Mutiara is a celebration of the unsung bond between First Peoples of the Kimberley and seafaring Malay peoples during a time of colonialism, racism, exploitation, slavery, and stolen children.
The work is Co-created, Co-Choreographed and Performed by Amin Farid, Dalisa Pigram, and Zee Zunnur, with Ahmat Bin Fadal providing Malay cultural advice, pearl diving history advice and silat training.
Mutiara premieres as part of Shinju Matsuri, 1 & 2 September at Broome Civic Centre. Book now.
