Burrbgaja Yalirra (Dancing Forwards)

About

Burrbgaja Yalirra (Dancing Forwards) is a three-year commitment by Marrugeku to support the next generation of change-makers in contemporary, community-connected, intercultural and Indigenous dance. Launching in 2017 with a two-week laboratory within the Sydney Festival and led by Marrugeku’s co-artistic directors, Yawuru, dancer and choreographer Dalisa Pigram and director and dramaturg Rachael Swain, they will be joined over the next three years by a select group of their long-term collaborators. Together they will introduce Marrugeku’s Belgian influenced approach of devising contemporary intercultural dance in First Nations’ contexts, drawing on the dancers’ own stories, memories and cultural backgrounds. The first two years will focus on choreographic processes and the final year on cultural dramaturgy. Participants will share experiences of creating contemporary dance across their own remote and urban, Indigenous and non-Indigenous contexts. Marrugeku’s co-artistic directors will develop individual trajectories for each participant through the program as they variously join group laboratories, produce solo performance, participate in international trans-indigenous exchange, work as co-devisors in Marrugeku productions and/or are mentored in projects in their home communities.

Burrbgaja Yalirra 2 will be in Broome in 2018

Their dance is not just comment but is the very negotiation and substance of the drama.
