REALMstudios x Marrugeku

In 2025 Marrugeku initiated a partnership with REALMstudios to support Marrugeku’s next steps in its hallmark, Indigenous-led, intercultural, co-design processes to research, map and visualise speculative futures for new work, Ngurragabu. Based in Perth, Sydney and Melbourne, REALMstudios operate at the intersection between creative and technical disciplines of architecture, landscape architecture, planning, environmental and social sciences, ecology, and art. As landscape architects they constantly negotiate the constructs of nature and culture — working on their reconciliation. When built, their designs literally become stages for the theatre of life. Their designs create futures, define our interactions between each other and the non-human. They are compelled to collaborate to creatively explore these futures in any form. By mapping real predictions of environmental change, societal collapse, population depletion and redistribution and species extinction through the leading edge of spatial information technologies, 3D scanning and digital heritage methodologies, this partnership will enhance significantly the source materials Marrugeku’s culturally and community informed content development and co-design processes.

Through immersive trips hosted by custodians on Yawuru and Bardi Country, alongside ongoing dialogues with the wider creative and cultural team, the landscape futurists at Realm combined their practice of listening to Country with predictive technologies and spatial imagination to develop the future/past time scales of Ngurragabu.
