In 2017 Marrugeku will launch a new emerging artist program for young dancers and musicians from the Kimberley region based in Broome. Following the success of Marrugeku’s two year remote community access and participation program Gibidem YourStyle!, the Company identified emerging dancers and musicians in the Kimberley as a target group who would benefit greatly from further opportunities. The program will provide 15 to 23 year olds interested in a career in the performing arts with professional instruction in culturally informed contemporary dance, song writing and music composition for performance.
The program is designed for talented senior high school students and recent school leavers who have demonstrated potential and enthusiasm for dance and music. Marrugeku will work with the senior high schools, and the cultural and arts community in the region to identify individuals and offer them a program of after-school and holiday masterclasses during the year. The emerging artists will be introduced to new processes and cultural pathways in the creation of contemporary dance and music by experienced Marrugeku dancers, choreographers, musicians and guest local artists.
